Where We've Come From
SigEp was originally founded in 1901 at Richmond College, now the University of Richmond, in Richmond, Virginia. In 1914, SigEp expanded and established it’s Missouri Alpha chapter, the first SigEp chapter in the state, at the University of Missouri The chapter operated continuously for over 100 years providing a positive experience and environment for brothers to build lifelong relationships and set a foundation for success throughout their lives.
Unfortunately, the chapter’s operations did not always live up to the high standards that were set for it. In the fall of 2017, the chapter’s alumni and volunteer corporation, the university and SigEp Headquarters mutually agreed to close the chapter due to hazing, risky behavior towards alcohol and other substances, lapses in judgment and consistent failure to live SigEp’s values. All of these factors contributed to a chapter culture where the value of SigEp and the Balanced Man Program simply could not exist.
Where We Are Now
SigEp returned to the University of Missouri in fall of 2019 and moved into our renovated house on 405 Kentucky Boulevard this fall after four straight semesters of having the highest grade point average amongst fraternities!
SigEp was founded with the promise, “This fraternity will be different,” and those who join SigEp will have the unique opportunity to bring that promise to life and build their own legacy. To build a different fraternity experience, we will do things differently from other fraternities on campus. For example:
- Recruit values-based, highly talented individuals whether they are a freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or above from the first day of classes through the last day of finals and every day in between.
- Root our chapter culture in equal rights and responsibilities where each member is welcomed as a brother and treated with respect from the moment they accept an invitation to become a brother, through the day they graduate and through all of their days as a SigEp alumnus.
- Engage in a continuous member development experience to surround brothers in a community in which each member is on their own path to becoming the best version of themselves.
- Appoint our first executive board to put undergraduate leaders in the driver’s seat of the SigEp experience.
- Build a team of alumni, higher education professionals and friends of SigEp to mentor undergraduate leaders and challenge brothers to grow past their potential while elevating the values and success of the chapter both now and into the future.
The opportunity to set the tone and foundation for the chapter’s legacy starts now. To learn more about the process of our return or express your interest in getting involved, please contact chapter president Andrew Hinkamp, by phone at 314-722-9181 or by email at andrewhinkamp@gmail.com.
